This program assists students with an interest in pursuing a healthcare career with the English skills they need to take their next step. Students build reading comprehension, speaking, and writing skills. In addition, they explore the healthcare opportunities available here in Maine and set short and long-term goals for a future career in healthcare.  Students are required to enroll in a Digital Skills for Learning and the Workplace class or document their digital skills through completion of a test prior to the start of class.

CDL Class B Permit Prep Course

CDL Class B Permit Prep Course

The purpose of this online program is to prepare English language learners for the Commercial Driver's License Class B permit test. Students also receive practice so that they can take the Passenger (Bus) Vehicle and School Bus endorsements as part of their permit application. A Class B Maine license allows drivers to operate a vehicle up to 26,000 pounds. Past students have been hired as bus drivers at a variety of locations in the Portland area, including MetroBus and Portland Public Schools. Students will be using the State of Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicle handbook and online resources to prepare for the multiple choice exam.

This class is intended for the person who has had little practice using Microsoft Products, but with basic digital competency. We will use MS Word to create and edit documents containing images, graphs and hyperlinks. We will use Excel to create and edit basic spreadsheets, using it to calculate and organize data. Everyone will create presentations in PowerPoint, learning to animate text and images and incorporate media like video, music and voice recording. Each student will learn how to use skills they learn about effective presentations to deliver one to the class. We will learn to navigate screens between Google and Microsoft Office. We will learn about Office 365, One Drive file sharing and Teams. 

Prerequisites: Completion of Digital Skills for the Workplace or completion of basic computer skills test, CASAS score of 238+

Teller Training Program

A 22 week program, offered in partnership with ProsperityME, which prepares English language learners for entry level careers in the banking world. Students complete two core courses in the first term of the program, Digital Skills for Learning and the Workplace and Foundational Skills for Professional Careers. After their successful completion, then students complete a national bank teller curriculum called Today’s Teller, co-taught by representatives from local financial institutions. Students also complete Writing, Communication, and Workplace Culture class and a Career Planning Capstone course. Students leave the program with a Today's Teller certificate from the Center for Financial Training and Education Association (CFTEA).
