Do you want to understand how education works in the United States, and in Maine? How it is organized, how decisions are made, what kinds of jobs are available, how parents can be involved, and how laws ensure that ALL children and youth have access to a free public education? Do you want to learn about common teaching methods? This course is geared toward new Mainers who want the answers to these questions. People who were teachers in their home country, people who want to work in schools, or people who are just curious about schools and education in their new country. ESOL Level 5 or above, or Level 4 with teacher recommendation. Online Registration is not available for this course. It may be subject to certain prerequisites or inventory requirements. Have you been working or about to start your first job? Do you have questions about the benefits at your job, including different types of insurance? What do you need to know about 401Ks or other retirement plans? Are you unsure about when you might need insurance for your apartment, car or house? If your answer to any of these questions is yes, then this course is for you. Understanding the benefits you are offered at your job will help you take full advantage of them. Knowing how much insurance you need and what it will cover will help you know you are not spending too much but that you are protected. This class is for those who are ESOL Level 4 and above. Are you Interested in starting a business?  This course will give an overview of entrepreneurship, develop an entrepreneurial frame of mind and learn how to differentiate an idea from an opportunity. Students will develop a business idea and explore if it has the potential to be a viable business. They learn basic budgeting, cashflow, market analysis, and necessary permits and licenses to start a business. Students will meet entrepreneurs and business professionals and learn the highs and lows of entrepreneurship.  Students will also do a self-assessment of leadership and management skills – SWOT (strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats) analysis.  ESOL Level 5 or above, or Level 4 with teacher recommendation.
